Scalp & Hair Oiling Routines
Share
A good scalp and hair oiling routine can help nourish your hair from the roots, support hair growth, and improve scalp health. Here's a guide to an effective oiling routine:
Choose the Right Oil:
-
Coconut Oil: Moisturizing, clarifying and antimicrobial properties. The one downside is that it is considered comedogenic
-
Argan Oil: Rich in vitamin E, it helps hydrate and soften hair
-
Olive Oil: Strengthens hair and reduces frizz
-
Jojoba Oil: Helps balance the scalp's oil production
-
Castor Oil: Nutrient dense and famed for supporting hair growth.
You may combine oils to create the mix of properties you’re looking for.
We also sell a great scalp and hair oil blend that works amazingly well for all hair types. includes jojoba oil, olive oil, argan oil, broccoli seed oil, and rosemary essential oil. Check it out here.
Onto the oiling routines!
SCALP TREATMENT:
Scalp oiling is a great way to deliver nutrients and moisture to your hair’s root system. And we personally think its also great as a clarifying treatment because oil breaks down residue and even other oils. Then, when you shampoo after your scalp oil treatment, all that extra gunk gets washed away too.
HOW TO DO SCALP OILING:
On hair washing day, oil your scalp at least 30 minutes prior to washing. We prefer to let the oil sit for 2+ hours, but even 30 minutes makes a notable difference. Many will choose to leave the oil in overnight, covering part of their bedding with towels and using a shower cap.
Divide your hair into sections to make the application process more efficient, especially if you have long or thick hair. You can apply oil to your scalp with a dropper bottle, parting your hair and dropping little dots of oil directly onto your scalp if possible.
Or you can drop some oil onto your fingertips then rub your fingertips into your scalp.
Massage scalp with fingers to further distribute the oil. This massage increases circulation, stimulates the fascia, and relieves tension in this and surrounding areas (like the face). You can amp up the effects even further by using a scalp massager after using your fingers.
Be Gentle - avoid harsh pulling or scratching during the scalp massage.
After letting the oil sit on scalp/roots for however long you choose, shampoo and condition as you normally do. If you used a lot of oil, you may need to shampoo twice.
SCALP OILING FREQUENCY
-
Once a Week: For general maintenance, oiling once a week is great!
-
2-3 Times a Week: If you’re trying to boost hair growth or combat scalp dryness, you can increase oiling frequency.
USING HAIR OIL TO SMOOTH HAIR:
Use 1 or more drops of oil. More for longer hair, and more if you prefer the feel/look of more oil in the hair. With oil, less is often more, so we do advise starting with very little and adding more slowly.
Rub oil between your palms and fingers. Distribute by:
-
smoothing palms over the length of your hair
-
running fingers through the layers of the length of your hair
HAIR OILING FREQUENCY
This routine can be enjoyed anytime. Do this as often as you find works for hair. Many customers lightly oil the length of their hair daily.
TIPS:
-
Patch Test: Before using any oil, do a patch test to ensure you’re not allergic to it.
-
Consistency: Like any hair care routine, consistency is key to seeing the best results.
We think you’ll find that using either, or both, of these simple but effective routines will help improve the health and appearance of your hair over time.
